Reel Fantasy mate Luis “Wicho” Ramirez said,” Hey Pino, I gonna show you somting, watch dis”. He grabbed a Killer Pink and White Squidnation Flippy Floppy and a pair of scissors and snip, he cut my rig up. Then he rigged a purple lure and clipped it 4 feet behind a single Flippy squid and said,” Dis gonna get bit, watch”. 10 minutes later I saw a tail swish behind the left short. The seas were calm so it was very easy to see that it was a nice blue marlin. The 2nd pass he was angry and just crushed the purple lure. The fish started screaming away. Tackle failure at the rod tip broke the line and we lost the blue. Imagine our amusement when we got a call on the radio a minute later when a fishing buddy said hey Capt. a blue is going crazy off your bow and he gettin his butt beat by a flippy floppy.
We really get excited when we see customers sharing how they alter our rigs and customize them to get bites behind their boats. Every boat is different, smart crews keep trying different ideas and small customization or wholesale changes to make it happen behind their boats.
Last year we got a picture from Capt. Bubba Carter showing off his Squidnation Killer Pink Rubber Mauler Squid Dredge. It was all pink except for the middle chain was Electric Blue and another chain was white. He said that one different color in the dredge is enough to make a difference. Try it out you’ll see.
Sometimes the customization is less sexy but very effective. Capt John Bayliss of the Tar Heel sent us a note last year asking if we could make a dredge for him but to bump up the line diameter on the chains. I asked why and he said that heavier line will have less memory and will keep its integrity when it gets tangled or frayed. It was a great suggestion and we made the decision to up the line grade on all of our pre-made rigs.
Years ago I got a call from friend Allan Hazzard who said he had an idea for me. He loved our ghost spreader bars. His suggestion was to add a few multi-colored birds to the bar. So I asked if he just wanted a bird bar with the bar going through the bird. He said no and here’s why. Bird bars break and the guys that make bird bars make them with huge birds. The drag of a giant bird in a spreader bar seems to be a great de-hooker. We always lose fish on those bars. He suggested we add a few little birds to the lead of the chain in the bars. It will cause more of a commotion and he believed would be less drag to fight. He was right on both accounts. A few days later he called and reported the Yellowfins couldn’t take it. They crushed the bar all day long. So I made one for myself and tried it. The results were stellar. That day the Squidnation Candy Bar was born and has been one of our top sellers.
Another effective alteration to our Squidnation Flippy Floppy Thing was seen frequently used in the Dominican Republic. Some crews had noticed that the rig was working but white marlin could sneak in grab the chase bait unnoticed because all of the commotion caused by the flippy floppy and the bird. So they customized the rig and used a few flippy floppy squids in the lead positions and followed it by a few single squids and removed the bird. The rig proved so effective we noticed quite a few of the top boats in the Mid-Atlantic had that same customized rig hanging from their riggers this past September.
A big part of the fun of fishing is getting a bite on a rig that we produced. So I can imagine that we share that excitement with fisherman around the world. Give it a shot. If you have an idea then make it happen. If for some reason you can’t make it happen give us a call. We can try to make it happen for you. A perfect example of having us customize your rig came to us from Capt Bomboy Llanes. Bomboy loved our natural squids but he wanted two alterations made to the squid itself. He asked us to darken it by 10% and have the color throughout the entire squid instead of just the body. So we came up with the Bomboy Brown Squid. I think it worked. Check out the video below. Think it worked?
